Help! What do I wear to my session?

Engagement sessions are so much fun! You know what you want to do with the photos… send out your Save the Dates, add photos to your wedding website, so many ideas. But when it comes to outfit ideas, you’re drawing a blank…what are you going to wear!?!? Let us help!

First and most importantly, be comfortable! Your first thought might be to go out and buy a brand spankin’ new outfit, and new shoes. And that’s fine! But hold on a sec…what about your cute sun dress, your favorite top, or those jeans that make your butt look amazing!? The truth is… if you FEEL amazing, you will LOOK amazing. But if you don’t FEEL like yourself, your discomfort can show through in your photos. So be yourself, and choose something you know moves with you and hugs you in all the right places.

Plan your outfits around the location and season. Think about where you’re going to walking when picking your footwear. Avoid all black on a hot summer day, but instead, choose fabrics that move and flow with you. Fabrics that add a cosy texture, or get picked up by the wind, and glow in the late afternoon sun.

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to colors; if you love to embrace bold colors, go for it! But you can’t go wrong with neutrals, earthy tones, and metallics. And can we all just agree that matchy-matchy is not cool!? When you wear the exact same color as your partner, you might start to blend together; we won’t be able to tell where one of you begins and the other ends. (Blob = Bad) Instead choose colors that complement each other — the goal is to have everything look good together without everything looking the same.

Avoid distractions, like clothing with big logos or busy patterns. The last thing we want is for these things to take the attention away from your beautiful faces!

Layers and accessories not only make for more visually interesting photographs, but you’ll also be ready for all sorts of weather conditions, too! Think denim jackets, cardigans, hats, scarves, tights, and headbands.

Make sure that the ring is sparklingly clean, and your nails are neat. We’re probably going to get in close on your hands at some point, and we don’t want to magnify unruly cuticles, chipped manicures, or dirty fingernails.

Consider professional hair and makeup. Maybe even schedule your makeup trial for that day! Up-dos are alright, but I’m a sucker for the way a wild mane blows in the breeze. With your hair down, you get movement, you get interest.

Bring along meaningful props; your pet, an instrument, or even a beer. Less is definitely more when it comes to props. Go for the subtle things that accentuate your personality and help to tell a story about your life. Better to have no props, then forced or cheesy props. If you’re bringing your pet, consider asking a friend to tag along so that you can do some photos without your fur baby.

So, in short, plan ahead, be yourself, but most importantly, make sure you are comfortable! And if you have any questions, or want to run an outfit idea by me, just give us a call or send us a message!
